The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate department that offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the physical and natural sciences. The program is offered by the core faculty of Applied Science in cooperation with affiliated faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), as well as from the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab).   Faculty research interests include nondestructive evaluation, robotics, medical imaging, epidemic modeling, nanotechnology, surface science, electronic and magnetic materials, physical and chemical properties and characterization of polymers, laser spectroscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, neurophysiology, and computational neuroscience and cell biology.

More information about undergraduate courses can be found here. There are also a variety of ways upper level undergraduate students can do scientific research in Applied Science labs as well as the labs of our many affiliates:

Ø      VIRGINIA MICROELECTRONICS CONSORTIUM (VMEC) 2008 SCHOLARS PROGRAM. If you are currently a junior or senior in a 4-year degree program at a university in Virginia, you are eligible to join us for a summer program that will give you a hands-on, state-of-the-art research experience.

Ø      Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program is funded by the NSF and provides undergraduates genuine involvement in actual research in the Physics and the Applied Science departments. We have collaborations at the nearby laboratories: Thomas Jefferson Lab, and NASA Langley Research Center.

Ø      The W&M HHMI Program provides research opportunities in biology and the other sciences—particularly in interdisciplinary arenas. In addition to basic research opportunities, the program also funds an integrated "support system" for undergraduate research designed to draw these student researchers into the broader scientific community.

Ø      Computational Science Training for Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences (CSUMS) is a new collaborative program between the Departments of Mathematics, Applied Science, and Computer Science which is currently recruiting William & Mary undergraduate students interested in participating in a CSUMS research project.

Ø      The Chemistry department supports the full-time research efforts of 45-55 undergraduate chemistry majors each summer through internal and external funding. Students are provided with a ten-week stipend and with free dormitory housing.

University directions and visitor information can be found here. Visitor parking passes are available for $3 per day from the Parking Services office or parking is available in the lots around Merchants Square near the Ancient Campus. A campus map (1.1 MB pdf file) may be downloaded, or hard copies obtained from Parking Services. The Applied Science main office is in McGlothlin-Street Hall, building 51 on the campus map. It can be reached by walking up Jamestown Rd., turning onto Landrum Dr., cutting between Landrum and Chandler Halls, and walking downhill to the back of McGlothlin-Street Hall. A scenic route from Merchants Square is to walk through the Wren Building and down the left side of the Sunken Garden. Applied Science is on the third floor of the third building on the left side of  the Sunken Garden.
